About "The Shield"
Student reporters and editors of The Shield take a class during each school day. They get a chance to learn about the finer points of journalism, along with interviewing their fellow students and teachers, reporting on important news within the school, and gaining good journalism experience. The Advisor, Mr. Robert Giuliani, leads the students through their jobs, giving them useful advice for the various jobs done in order to create The Shield, assigns editor jobs to those who are interested and have the appropriate credentials, and eventually allows the students to run the class themselves.
There are various jobs available to take within The Shield. These include Editorial jobs, such as: Editor-In-Chief, Managing Editor, Layout Editor, Photo Editor, Copy Editor, News Editor, Feature Editor, Entertainment Editor, Sports Editor, Opinion Editor, and Exchange Editor; Managing jobs, such as: Advertising Manager, Patron Manager, Public Relations (or P.R.) Manager, Business Manager, Circulation Manager, Librarian, News Brief Manager, and Unclassifieds Manager; and other jobs such as Assistant to the Managers and Editors, Reporters and Photographers.
The staff of The Shield work with enthusiasm; they are able to create a successful, professionally created newspaper within their deadlines. This helps to foster a desire for following journalistic standards, and leads to the fair, honest, and responsible writing seen within each article of every issue. Some students even go on to pursue a journalism major in college.
The Shield consists of various types of articles, including Features, News Briefs, Opinion articles, News articles, Editorials, Clubs and Classes articles, New Teacher articles, Sports articles, Student Life articles, and Letters to the Editor. The newspaper is usually twelve to sixteen pages, but could be longer depending on current events happening within the school.
The Shield accepts new staff members every year. If interested, consult with Mr. Giuliani in Room 269 and sign up during the second semester of school. An interest in writing, photography, or reporting is highly recommended.
Updates to this site will be made throughout the year. Please check for more information on LHS Shield activities!
